The two Arkansas artists highlighted in this exhibition offer explorations of the concept of origin through works depicting the natural world.
Approaching the notion of origin in an alternate way, Jessica Mongeon’s paintings relate natural phenomena to childbirth. She finds a rich overlap in the shapes that emerge from lichen and the form of the human placenta. Born in the Great Plains, Jessica is the new mother of a son born in the Natural State.
Steven Wise’s landscapes are derived from his study of the Ozark Mountains, the place he considers home. Exploring this wooded landscape as both naturalist and artist, he records his observations and uses them in a unique abstract language of line, form, and color.
